Cully’s Craft Bakery, located in Arva, is celebrating this week after winning a top honour at the world-renowned 2020 Great Taste Awards.
Out of 12,777 items shipped from 106 different countries, a 1 Star Great Taste award for their traditional buttermilk soda bread was given to the long-established family-run company.

Great Taste is the most coveted of all food and drink prizes, judged by 144 of the most discerning palates, belonging to food reviewers, chefs, cooks, restaurateurs, purchasers, retailers and manufacturers, as well as food writers and journalists.

This year, there were 12,777 entries into Great Taste and 205 of those items were given a 3 star, 1,294 a 2 star and 3,818 a 1 star rating.

Brían Cully, the third generation of the Cully family, after his father Barney, to take the position of Managing Director at Cullys Craft Bakery, explained: ‘This is the first year we have entered into the Great Taste awards and to be honest, we were only looking for some feedback; given the vast amount of entries from all over the world, we never dreamed our Buttermilk Soda would be recognised on this International platform.

“It’s given us a great boost and reinforces our belief here in the bakery – traditional baking, better tasting.”

Recognized by both customers and retailers as a stamp of quality, Great Taste values taste above all else, without regard to branding and packaging.
If it is being tested for chocolate , coffee, kippers or kombucha, before being tasted, all items are separated from their wrapper, container, box or bottle.
To determine the items are deserving of a 1, 2 or 3-star rating, the judges then savour, confer and re-taste.
