Spring is almost upon us and with it, brands and retailers have been busy creating a raft of new bakery concoctions.
From pretzels and pies to vegan quiches and sweet chocolate cakes and strudels, we round up the latest hot products to hit shelves.
Along with the warmer weather, Lidl’s Alpine-themed food range has made a return with nine Ready-To-Bake Pretzels (rsp: £1.79/785g) among the attractions. Joining the line-up is a Crumble Tart in plum, cherry or custard flavours (rsp: £2.99/1.25kg) and a Viennese-Style Apple Strudel (rsp: £1.79/375g).
Clive’s Purely Plants
The organic plant-based pie makers have extended their vegan offer with a single-serve Vegan Quiche Lorraine and Creamy Cauliflower Quiche.
The 165g pies are made with Clive’s signature egg replacement, okara (the whey from making soya blends), which helps create an ‘eggy quiche texture’.
“As a family following a 100% vegan diet we were still seeking that comforting indulgent creaminess in our food, which we created in the Creamy Cauliflower Quiche,” MD Esther Pearson said. “The bacon replacement we use in the vegan Quiche Lorraine is tempeh, made locally in Somerset, which we marinated with smoked paprika and maple syrup.”
The pies are on an introductory £2 offer in Waitrose and Partners.
Mission Foods UK is tapping into the trend for Middle Eastern cuisine with an artisan Khobez flatbread.
The traditional Lebanese bread, which can be served hot or cold, folded, rolled or wrapped, can be used as a sliced bread replacement for sandwiches.
“As consumers continue to explore the trend of global flavours, operators need to have versatile menu solutions to meet this demand,” Kim Hartley, executive business development chef, Mission Foods, said. “The new Mission Khobez flatbread is essential for upgrading any lunch or on-the-go offering.”
Belgian pastry specialist Pidy has unveiled what it describes as the ultimate pastry case for creating quiches.
Measuring 8.5cm wide and with a 2.1cm height, the pressed puff pastry, known as rough-puff, is made from a traditional Dutch method that is said to enable the pastry to stay firm when cold without sogginess. The brand says the crisp, flaky texture and neutral flavour make it ideal for savoury fillings.
The quiche cases can be re-baked, topped with potato or puff pastry lids or even filled and then frozen.
“What makes the pastry used for our quiche cases so special is the traditional rough-puff recipe which creates just the right amount of crisp flakiness and all-important crunch whilst still holding up well to all kinds of fillings,” Fabien Levet, commercial manager at Pidy UK. “As we approach spring, quiches are a menu staple that are easily adaptable, and we’re delighted to make customers lives that little bit easier with our ready-to-fill quiche cases.”
Bells of Lazonby
The family bakery’s We Love Cake range has launched into Waitrose and Partners following a successful debut in Morrison’s last November.
There are three flavours to choose from:
- Totally Toffee Sticky Toffee Slices, a toffee sponge topped with a toffee-flavoured frosting, oat crumble and crystallised ginger pieces
- Rip-Roaring Raspberry Ripple Slices, a vanilla sponge sandwiched with raspberry jam and finished with a vanilla flavour frosting and freeze-dried raspberry pieces
- Very Berry Raspberry & Coconut slices, a pastry base with a layer of raspberry and cranberry filling, and toasted coconut topping.
“The time seemed right to mix a good bit of nostalgia with some new baking techniques to offer consumers something different and indulgent at the free-from cake fixture,” said Josh Boydell-Smith head of brand and marketing at Bells of Lazonby. “In a time of uncertainty, heart-warming and familiar flavours will add a little bit of sparkle.”
Each pack contains four slices and costs £1.80.
